Zurich UK reported a record £109.3 million in fraudulent insurance claims detected over the past 12 months, averaging one bogus claim every two hours. The insurer identified 4,359 fraudulent claims across its casualty, motor and property portfolios, a 22 % rise in volume from 2022’s 3,562 cases.

Casualty fraud accounted for the largest share, with £61.6 million across 2,380 claims. Motor fraud contributed £28.1 million from 1,027 claims, while property fraud represented £19.6 million in 951 claims. Advanced analytics and AI flagged 860 claims worth £17.9 million, roughly one in five of all detections.

Zurich’s technology stack, supplied by data-analytics firm Quantexa, links each claim to information from Companies House, Equifax, industry intelligence and the Insurance Fraud Register. This comprehensive data integration revealed claimants using multiple aliases, unrelated claims tied to the same accident site, and networks involving rogue solicitors and accident-management firms. One investigation connected individuals in one UK region to staged accidents hundreds of miles away.

Scott Clayton, head of claims fraud at Zurich UK and chair of the Insurance Fraud Bureau, said criminal groups are increasingly sophisticated, employing staged accidents, ghost broking, fabricated claims and AI-generated evidence. He highlighted that the blend of analytics, specialist investigators and human judgement is strengthening defence against fraud while also accelerating settlement for low-risk, legitimate claims.

Industry-wide data from the Association of British Insurers shows insurers detected £1.34 billion in fraudulent claims in 2025, a 14 % increase in value despite a slight dip in case numbers. Application fraud rose 24 %, with £1.8 billion in fraudulent applications stopped. Similar patterns emerged internationally, such as a fabricated death claimed at four South African insurers within a week, uncovered only through cross-market data comparison.

Why it matters

The surge in AI-enabled fraud and Zurich’s data-linking approach signal heightened risk and tighter scrutiny for brokers and insurers alike.
