Lloyd’s opens building to market staff for 40th anniversary
From November 18 to 25, Lloyd’s will host a week-long exhibition called “Looking Inside Out: Explore the Architecture of Risk” inside its historic building. The event is open to every employee of managing agencies and Lloyd’s broking houses, including non-underwriting staff who have traditionally not had access to the Underwriting Room.
Curated with RSHP, the architectural practice that designed the building, the exhibition guides visitors through immersive zones that use sound, film, photography and storytelling to trace the building’s history, its distinctive design by Richard Rogers, and its function as a hub for connecting people, capital and expertise worldwide.
Patrick Tiernan, chief executive of Lloyd’s, highlighted that the venue’s value lies not only in its architecture but also in the people, energy and ideas it gathers under one roof. The building, opened in 1986 with services placed on the exterior to create a large atrium, received Grade I listed status in 2011.
The timing coincides with notable market developments: Generali’s approval for Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge, Credeq’s approval for Syndicate 1998, OAK Global’s new partnerships unit, and Zurich’s acquisition of Beazley, which gives Zurich a Lloyd’s presence for the first time. The exhibition also supports broader talent-attraction efforts, such as online job simulations launched by the Lloyd’s Market Association and the International Underwriting Association.
Why it matters
The open-house event gives insurers a low-cost way to showcase the market’s heritage and culture, aiding staff engagement and talent retention.
