Liberty Mutual Q3 premiums down, reserves boost results

Liberty Mutual reported a third-quarter net income of $2.07 billion, down from $2.22 billion a year earlier, as its US personal lines business contracted. Net written premiums in the US Retail Markets segment slipped 5.6% to $6.72 billion for the quarter and 2.8% over the first nine months, reflecting a broader softening of personal-line pricing nationwide.

The insurer’s combined ratio rose to 89.5% from 84.7% a year earlier, while the underlying combined ratio—excluding catastrophes and prior-year development—climbed 4.5 points to 91.9%. The increase was driven primarily by a 4.0-point rise in the underwriting expense ratio, which reached 35.4%, and a modest 0.5-point uptick in the claims ratio to 56.5%. Liberty Mutual did not explain the expense-ratio jump.

Reserve releases provided a significant cushion to the headline figures. Favorable prior-year development of $840 million—more than double the $416 million released a year earlier—improved the combined ratio by 7.7 points. Limited partnership income also rose 36% to $810 million. However, catastrophe losses increased to $585 million, up 5.3 points from $114 million.

Global Risk Solutions, the company’s commercial and specialty arm, reported flat quarterly net written premiums of $4.0 billion and a 3.1% year-to-date increase. Total net written premiums for the insurer fell 2.8% to $10.74 billion. In parallel, Liberty Mutual announced an agreement to acquire Brazil’s surety provider Austral Seguradora, a deal slated to close in 2027 pending regulatory approval.

For agents handling personal lines, the premium decline signals a carrier that is prioritising profitability over growth as the market eases. While other insurers are beginning to file rate cuts, Liberty Mutual’s focus on disciplined underwriting and its investment in new distribution channels—such as a ChatGPT-based auto-quote app launched earlier this year—may limit aggressive price competition. The rising expense ratio and reliance on large reserve releases suggest that margin pressure could intensify if premium volumes continue to drop.

Why it matters

The shift in Liberty Mutual’s premium growth and margin dynamics signals how major carriers may balance profitability and pricing in a softening personal-lines market.
